Flodex Powder Flowability Tester

The Hanson Flodex Powder Flowability Tester, exclusively available from JB Pharmatron, is ideal for determining the intrinsic flowability of powders. Recommended for the quality control of powders and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API's), used in the pharmaceutical production and other industrial processes. The Flodex instrument includes 1 complete set of 19 index flow disks.

As defined by Dr. A. Gioia at the Dow Pharmaceutical Research Labs in Milan, intrinsic flowability is the property of a powder to flow evenly under the action of gravity and other forces. His technique uses the FLODEX Tester to determine a repeatable flowability index over an arbitrary scale of 4-40. By using the Flodex system analysis have benefited from:

  • Simple repeatable index of flowability of powders;

  • Flowability testing before set-up of tableting or capsule filling equipment;

  • The establishment of a reliable flowability index for purchasing and quality assurance specifications;

  • Avoiding high coefficient of variation in product uniformity.

This one simple test takes into account the numerous parameters that affect powder flowability such as particle size and shape, 'fines', unit surface, actual and bulk density, porosity, settling and electrostatic charge.

The ETD-1020 is a two station tap density tester supporting both USP I and USP II methods of testing. The unit allows any one test to be performed at a time. The test can also be performed as per ASTM standards using the optional adapter for cylinder holders. Two different cylinder holders with snap-lock mechanism are designed to hold the 100 ml and 250 ml cylinders.

To ensure a free drop of the cylinder from the required height, the two stations are provided with virtually friction-free bearings. Each station is directly driven by independent motors to ensure a maintenance-free drive. A simultaneous rotating and tapping motion minimizes any possible separation of the mass during tapping down.

During the test the user is guided through a series of prompts on the LCD display. The on-line menus and status indicators make the operation of the instrument user friendly. The drops / minute is validated on-line and displayed by the instrument.

The value once programmed is retained in the memory of the instrument. The unit has a power failure detection facility which al-lows the user to complete the remaining test after the power supply is resumed.
